The largest of the archipelago islands, Bazaruto is one of Africa's premier scuba diving destinations. Divers are able to see over 100 species of coral, thousands of tropical fish species, five kinds of dolphins, four whale species and sharks, all five marine sea turtle species and the largest population of the rare dugong on the African east coast.

Indigo Bay offers world-class, understated luxury, with its elegant design making the most of its superb location on the white-sand shores of Bazaruto. State-of-the-art facilities include restaurants, bars, swimming pools, specialist dive pool, and an activity centre, which co-ordinates a wide variety of water sports, as well as diving and fishing activities.

With its tropical climate, unspoilt scenery and wealth of activities on offer, Indigo Bay is the perfect getaway for families, honeymooners and incentive groups.

Legendary species such as Giant Black Marlin, Sailfish and Wahoo frequent the deep Mozambique Channel surrounding the Bazaruto Archipelago and fishing is excellent all year round.

Environment and local community

All the resorts and hotels we feature have been specially chosen for the quality of service they provide and their responsible attitude towards the local area. We believe passionately that the correct development of tourism throughout the third world is a major contributor to protecting the environment and improving quality of life for the people that live there.

Indigo Bay and Rani Resorts has built community centres, implemented AIDS and malaria prevention programmes, provided transport facilities and access to water for local islanders and stimulated the establishment of community market gardens to supply fresh produce to Indigo Bay. The education and training needs of local people remains Rani's focus with the building of schools and initiating adult literacy programmes. Also on Bazaruto Island, Rani has formed a partnership with local communities to conserve the ecosystem and assist the Bazaruto National Park staff with transport, communication and health care facilities. Monitoring the location of turtle nesting sites, teaching the importance of conserving local marine life and working with the authorities to counter illegal fishing activities is a priority as well as implementing a tag and release policy for fishing activities in conjunction with Durban's Oceanographic Institute (ORI).

Our opinion

Indigo Bay Beach Resort and Spa is a luxury resort worthy of its 5 stars. The facilities are excellent and the range of activities is phenomenal. This resort is prefect for couples, romantics, divers and is one of the better options for families.

We found that despite being larger than some of the other properties in Mozambique it retained a quiet, tranquil and soothing aura.

This property is well suited for couples, groups and families as there is plenty to do for all ages.
